Artistic Impressions
What I See: The Beauty Surrounding Me

The CWSGR will be exhibiting What I See: The Beauty Surrounding Me, a photography exhibit by Debbie Norton in the Summer 2002.

According to Ms. Norton, “Over the past 20 years, as a working mother of three, my hobbies have mostly been limited to what my children were interested in. However, the one hobby I could maintain throughout was ‘picture-taking’. Recently, I've been working to develop this ‘eye’ for a more professional and polished look. This is what you will see displayed at the Center. I want this exhibit to reveal my growth from a young, insecure girl to a more mature and content woman. I am comfortable with myself and my expression of beauty. For me, my photography reflects the beauty that I see in all my surroundings. If you take just a moment, you too can find that beauty around you even in the simplest of things.” Ms. Norton’s photographs will be on display from May 3 to August 9, 2002 in 3324 Turlington Hall. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Women in Science Retreat

by Dr. Marta Wayne

January 12th was a milestone event for CLAS women graduate students in the sciences. A committee of graduate students and faculty, with representation from the Center for Women's Studies and Gender Research (CWSGR), organized a retreat for CLAS graduate women in the sciences. Funding for the retreat was provided by CLAS Dean Neil Sullivan, CWSGR, several of the science departments, and by the UF graduate school. The goal of the retreat was to improve the climate for graduate women in the sciences in CLAS, both by building community among these women and by acknowledging and exploring some of the unique challenges of being a woman in the sciences.

After a welcome and introductions by Dr. Angel Kwolek-Folland of CWSGR and Dr. Lisa McElwhee-White, Associate Dean of CLAS, Laura Sirot, a graduate student in Zoology, led a forum on communication between graduate students and advisors. The next session was led by guest speaker, Dr. Mary Wyer, assistant professor in the Women's and Gender Studies Program at North Carolina State University. Dr. Jane Brockmann, past chair of Zoology, and past United Florida Faculty Union president, led a session on "Myths and Realities" of being a woman in science. She highlighted progress made in the last fifty years, but also documented the ongoing lack of parity in salary, and in appointments to higher ranks such as full professors and department chairs. Dr. Jaquelyn Resnick of the Counseling Center led a formal discussion on the importance of balancing professional life with the other aspects of one's life to avoid burnout. During the closing discussion, it became clear that institutional support was needed in order to achieve the ultimate goal of an improved climate for women graduate students in the sciences. -MW
